Academics

At SCAIS, we believe the most profound learning happens in the space between a mentor and a student. Our Learning Forward philosophy means we don't just deliver lessons, we ignite curiosity. By blending the rigorous American Standards with the conceptual depth of the International Baccalaureate (IB), we’ve created a roadmap that ensures our students don't just keep up with the future, they lead it.

The Curriculum: The Triple-Pillar Approach

We will utilize the International Baccalaureate (PYP) to teach students how to think, not what to think. Instead of isolated subjects, learning is organized around six transdisciplinary themes (such as "How the World Works" or "Sharing the Planet").

  • The Benefit: Students become "investigators." They don’t just memorize the water cycle; they analyze how water scarcity impacts global geopolitics.

  • Status: SCAIS Portugal is currently a candidate school for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme.

Disclaimer: Sierra Canyon American International School is a candidate school for the Primary Years Programme. Our school is pursuing authorization as an IB World School. These are schools that share a common philosophy, a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that we believe is important for our students. Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorization will be granted.

Primary Years

Focus: Bridging the IB PYP with high-level American academic rigor.

Math: Daily, structured Singapore Math lessons focused on visualization and problem-solving.

Language: Instruction shifts primarily to English (75-80%), building native-level fluency.

Middle School

Environment: A transition toward autonomy. Spaces are designed for collaboration and the ethical use of technology in research projects.

Curriculum: Driven by the IB MYP, challenging students to connect their studies to the real world through global contexts.

Math: Transitioning to High-Level Algebra via the "Singapore Math Bridge," solidifying logical reasoning before entering specialized disciplines.

High School

The Path: Intensive preparation for access to the world’s most prestigious universities.

The Credentials: Students work toward the US High School Diploma, with the option to pursue the prestigious IB Diploma Programme (DP) in their final two years.

College Counseling: Strategic, one-on-one guidance starting in Grade 9, crafting a profile of excellence for university applications.

Educational Technology & AI Literacy

In our school we don’t see technology only as a tool, but as a fundamental language for the 21st century. Our approach is not about screen consumption, it is about empowering students to use technology and Artificial Intelligence with ethics, discernment, and mastery.

AI as a Co-Pilot: Rather than being used to generate automatic answers, AI functions as a personalized tutor. It helps students structure their thinking or simulate complex debate scenarios.

Real-Time Personalization: These platforms use algorithms to adjust the difficulty of challenges to the student’s current level. If a student masters a Singapore Math concept quickly, the system offers a higher-level challenge. If there is a gap in understanding, the system pivots back to reinforce the foundation.

Data-Informed Mentorship: This allows our teachers to move beyond being mere "transmitters of information." Instead, they become strategic mentors, intervening exactly where and when each student needs it most.
