International Baccalaureate (IB)

At Sierra Canyon American International School, we believe that modern education must go beyond traditional memorization. Preparing children for a rapidly shifting global landscape requires an academic framework that teaches how to think, not what to think.

To achieve this, we have chosen the International Baccalaureate (IB) model as the foundational pillar for our school's future. The IB continuum is celebrated worldwide by top-tier universities for its academic rigor, its promotion of critical analysis, and its focus on intercultural understanding.

Starting with the PYP

SCAIS is currently an official Candidate School* for the Primary Years Programme (PYP).

Our implementation strategy is deliberate and focused: we are starting at the very beginning. Our milestone journey begins with our youngest learners (ages 3 to 12) at the Early Learning Campus, opening in September 2027. By focusing our initial energy on the PYP framework, we ensure that the foundational roots of independent research, curiosity, and confidence are deeply established from day one.

What is the International Baccalaureate?

The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a globally recognized, not-for-profit educational framework for students aged 3 to 19 that goes beyond traditional memorization to teach children how to think through a rigorous, inquiry-based approach. Driven by a mission to create a better world through intercultural understanding, it shapes independent, multilingual, and balanced lifelong learners by structuring all education around 10 core human attributes known as the IB Learner Profile. Broadly respected by the world's elite universities, this student-centered model fosters critical thinking and global citizenship, preparing young minds to solve complex, real-world problems.

The IB Learner Profile brings together ten essential character traits nurtured by partner schools, with the clear purpose of transforming students into active and socially responsible members of their communities. Working in tandem with these values, the Approaches to Learning (ATL) serve as a vital toolkit designed to teach students how to learn independently. Consequently, rather than simply focusing on the passive intake of academic content, this framework empowers young minds to manage their own educational journey effectively, sharpen their critical thinking, and interact successfully with the world around them.
